Who Has to Pass the Emission Test?
Starting January 1, 2025, all semi trucks operating in California must pass an emission test to obtain or renew their California Air Resources Board (CARB) certificate. This requirement applies to trucks operating within the state or those traveling to California. Truck owners, including owner-operators and fleet managers, need to ensure their vehicles meet the new emission standards.
When to Pass the Emission Test?
The emission test must be completed before the renewal of your CARB certificate, which is required for legal operation within California. This test can be done anytime the certificate is due for renewal, but it’s important to schedule it in advance to avoid any operational delays.
How to Pass the Emission Test?
To pass the CARB emission test, semi trucks must meet specific emissions standards based on their model year, engine type, and operation history. The test measures the level of pollutants, including nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM). The truck will need to pass the standards set by CARB, which may include compliance with specific diesel particulate filters (DPF), exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems, or other emission-control technologies.
